St. Joseph Island

School has its own Christmas Carol

School has its own Christmas Carol
St. Joseph Island has its very own Christmas carol that students and staff have been singing for twenty years.

School has its own Christmas Carol
It all started in the ‘90s with teacher John Good, who worked on the song with his class as a language and music project.  Mr. Good loved to play guitar and wrote the catchy music for the song himself.

Present day teacher Mrs. Whitley, an island girl herself, says,” it would have been about twenty years ago that they wrote this song and we’ve been singing it ever since”.

Mrs. Whitley leads the caroling and Pauline Rait, (AKA Mrs. Jagger) who has retired from teaching at the island school, comes back to play piano for them.  When students and staff gather in the gymnasium to sing Christmas carols,  they always save this special song as their final number of the day.

School has its own Christmas Carol

Wednesday I was lucky enough to catch them caroling, and took a video of the JK-6 students singing Christmas on the Island. You may have a hard time making out the words, so I’ve written them out below. It’s a real Island treasure, and as you will see the kids have a great time singing (and dancing) to their very own Christmas carol.

Christmas on the Island

It’s Christmas on the Island, it is a beautiful sight.

We’re searching on the K Line for a tree that is just right.

Maybe on the mountain or down in Hamilton’s Bay.

We’ll go and visit our friends all along the way.

 Chorus:

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, from all of us to you.

We hope that peace and happiness will last the whole year through.

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, from all of us to you.

We hope that peace and happiness will last the whole year through.

The Island is a colourful place with red and greens and whites.

We’ll take a ride to Hilton Beach, just to see the lights.

Let’s all go see Grandma, we’ll bake some Christmas cake.

Cookies, pies and Christmas pudding only Grandma can make.

Chorus:

In the Landing we’ll go caroling with all of our friends at school,

Maybe we’ll go skating if it’s not too cool.

We love our peaceful Island with all its roads and lines.

It’s the perfect place to stay at Christmas time!
