Emily McLeod and Kate McLellan share a passion for baking and have entered into a new business venture together.

Kate, who lives in the Village of Hilton and Emily, who lives in Laird Township, became friends at their day job as dental hygienists in Sault Ste. Marie. The pair discovered they both had a passion for baking and were very good at it, so they decided to try and market their goods.  The Open Air Market in Hilton Beach was the perfect part time opportunity to see if they could be successful.

The girls took their new venture very seriously and began practise baking every Saturday for months before the market opened. They tested and tweaked new recipes, and experimented with specialty items such as gluten-free cookies and brownies. They’ve also been dabbling in confectionary items like caramel corn and homemade marshmallows.

Kate says, “We needed an objective taste tester to provide unbiased feedback on our products and Woody has been great”. Woody owns the automotive shop down the street and apparently loves his new job, but worries about the side effects.  

The market has been open for three weeks now, and with summer in full swing, the demand for Em & Kate’s baking has grown. The girls start baking Friday afternoon and bake right on through most of the night to ensure its all fresh for Saturday morning. Kate says, “We run on about 3 hours sleep preparing for market, and that’s the only down side to their new venture”.
