Rousseau Girls Off & Racing

Rousseau Girls Off & Racing
Another racing season is underway for the Rousseau girls from Thessalon.  Shilo is racing for Team Hardwood this year, north of Barrie, and Chandra is still racing with the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club.

In mid-January, the girls competed in the Thunder Bay O Cup #1. Shilo placed 4th in her 7.5Km classic race, and finished 3rd in her 5km classic race.  That same day Chandra raced a 3.5km classic race, where she placed 5th.

The next day was a sprint skate qualifier 1.2km in which both girls won their category. Shilo even placed 1st amongst the best 16 and 17 years old girls in Ontario. In the sprint finials Chandra managed a 3rd place, but unfortunately Shilo had another skier step on her pole, which caused her to settle for a 5th place finish.

On Jan 23 and 24, both girls traveled to Valcartier Quebec for a Biathlon. Shilo’s first race was a 6km sprint, which includes one bout of prone shooting and one bout of shooting standing. Shilo finished 2nd losing out on a gold by only .9 of a second. Her time could not have gotten any closer.

The second day was a pursuit race, with biathletes starting in the order of their previous day’s results, in five second intervals. There are 2 bouts of prone shooting followed by 2 bouts of standing shooting. If a target is missed, a penalty lap of 150m must be completed before the racer can proceed to the ski trails to continue the race.

When the last bout of shooting was completed, the race was between Shilo and a skier from Ottawa. They started their last loop tied for first place, with 1.5Km to the finish line. Shilo had out skied the other girl by 16.6 seconds to claim gold. Chandra ended the weekend with two 4th place finishes.

The girls are looking forward to the Canadian Eastern Cross Country Championship coming up the first weekend in February. The championship will be held in Gatineau, Quebec, and 800 of the best skiers in Canada are expected to attend.  Good Luck Girls!
