Shilo Rousseau, made the long trek to the Yukon last week to race against Canada’s best cross country skiers.

Getting to the Yukon was an adventure in itself and the first time flying on a jet for Shilo. She and her dad Yves, drove to Ottawa to catch a direct flight to Whitehorse where Shilo would join 500 elite skiers for the 2016 Haywood National Ski Championships

Shilo had difficulty in her first competition, which was a 5Km classic race in zero degree temperatures. Some racers have “zero” skis specifically designed for warm weather skiing when it is extremely tricky to get the waxing right. Unfortunately, Shilo doesn’t have a pair of these skis yet and struggled with the conditions to finish 44th.

Shilo turned things around in her 5Km skate race with an amazing finish; placing 5th and taking the podium with the fastest junior girls in Canada.

Shilo’s coaches and family were hoping for a top ten finish and were absolutely thrilled when she finished in fifth place, only 19.3 seconds behind first.

Her next race was a sprint and she just missed making the semi-finals in a photo finish, to take 13th place overall. Still a pretty incredible finish at a National Championship event.

Her final race was a 7.5Km classic mass start, where she had to start 23 racers back, but worked her way up through the crowd to finish in 17th position.

The entire experience was one of a lifetime. While in the Yukon, they got to see the northern lights and visit the hot springs; a well-deserved treat after a week of intense competition and great end to the ski season.
