10th Annual Wild Game Dinner

10th Annual Wild Game Dinner

Saturday night was an other sold out Wild Game Dinner hosted by the Thessalon & Area Rod and Gun Club at the Community Hall in Bruce Station. This was the 10th annual dinner for the club, which is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Rod and Gun Club, like all organizations that own property and have buildings which require maintenance and upgrades, relies on fundraising events to cover these costs.

The club hosts many different shoots throughout the year including: archery, trap and rifle. These are fun and well attended, but they’re not real money-makers for the club, with most entry fees just covering expenses and prizes.

Ten years ago they decided to try hosting a Wild Game Dinner, and members, families and friends have been working hard to make this a very successful annual event.

Members prepared a potluck of wild game dishes which included: lynx, bear, snow goose, caribou, venison, moose, rabbit and fish. Every year Gail Burch creates a new themed cake for the dinner; this year was a fantastic migratory bird hunting cake.

Yves Gauthier of St. Joseph Island had the lucky ticket for the gun raffle and chose to take home the Remington 12 gauge over the rifle and crossbow also offered. Pictured above (R) with President Jim Davis (L).

Emcee for the evening Jim Davis, joked with the crowd saying, “We are going to build a wall. And pay for it ourselves.” He was referring to a new wall which needs to be built at the end of range #1 to meet safety regulations.

The major project last year, was to correct a drainage problem in a low area of the range. Other maintenance projects have included heating and electrical upgrades for the clubhouse.
