It was a busy week for East Algoma OPP at the Blind River detachment.

OPP CHARGE FEMALE WITH OBSTRUCTING JUSTICE

(SPANISH, ON) - On April 13, 2017, shortly after 4:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a threatening incident that came from the Town of Spanish.

Investigation determined that a 14 year old female had placed a telephone call to a family member. While speaking to the family member another female grabbed the phone and began threatening to physically harm the 14 year old female and her family.   

As a result, a 30 year old female from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Uttering Threats-Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Attempt to Obstruct Justice, contrary to section 139(1) of the CC; and
  • Intimidation-Justice System-Persons or general public, contrary to section 423(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 6, 2017.

MALE CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HARASSMENT

(BLIND RIVER, ON) - On April 13, 2017, shortly after 4:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a harassment complaint in the Town of Blind River.

Investigation determined that between February 2017 and April 13, 2017, a 17 year old female was continuously being harassed by an older male.

As a result, a 43 year male from Blind River, Ontario, was arrested and charged with: Criminal Harassment-Repeatedly Follow, Repeatedly Communicate, Watch and Beset, Threatening Conduct, contrary to section 264(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on June 1, 2017.

MALE CHARGED WITH UNMARKED CIGARETTES

(BLIND RIVER, ON) - On April 13, 2017, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated. While speaking to the driver, the officer observed packages of unmarked cigarettes in the vehicle

As a result, Martin SLOBODIAN, 71 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was issued two provincial offence notices and charged with:

  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes, contrary to section 29(2) of the Tobacco Tax Act; and
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.

VEHICLE IMPOUNDED AND DRIVER ARRESTED

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON)- On April 14, 2017, shortly after 12:00 p.m., members from of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties on Highway 17 east of the Town of Iron Bridge.

Police observed a westbound vehicle and conducted a licence plate check on the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated. Investigation determined the driver was disqualified from driving Canada wide and was arrested.

The male's vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.

As a result, Cory DEVEAUX, 38 years of age from Oshawa, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Driving While Disqualified, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on June 1, 2017.

STUNT DRIVING -MALE CHARGED

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE) - On April 16, 2017, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties on Highway 17 near the village of Spragge.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed passing several vehicles. A traffic stop was initiated. Investigation determined the vehicle was travelling at more than 60 kilometres over the posted 90 km/hr speed limit.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

As a result, Nicholas COUTU, 22 years of age, from Rayside-Balfour, Ontario was charged with: Race Motor Vehicle-Stunt, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on May 17, 2017.

SUSPENDED DRIVER- FEMALE CHARGED

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On April 16, 2017, shortly before 5:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Police observed an eastbound vehicle pass the officer's cruiser. A traffic stop was initiated. Investigation determined the driver was suspended. 

As a result, Natasha TURCOTTE, 28 years of age, from Sudbury, Ontario, was charged with: Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on May 17, 2017.
