The Kensington Conservancy is planning for their upcoming Desbarats Christmas Bird Count. The count is being conducted within the 12km radius around Desbarats, which includes Richards Landing, Hilton Beach, Bruce Mines, part of Laird Township, McCarrel Lake, Gordon Lake, and Caribou Lake.

"The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with over 100 years of citizen science involvement. It is an early-winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada, and many countries in the Western Hemisphere go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day to count birds."

If you are interested, there are two ways to join in the count. You can take part as a field observer, walking or driving sections within the circle area, with a small group. Or, if you have a bird feeder within the circle area, you can watch and record the birds that visit your feeder.

The count takes place on Saturday December 30th. That means that count week is December 27th, 28th, 29th, 31st and January 1st and 2nd.  Count week allows us time to record any additional species that were not observed on the actual day of the count.

For example, last year, no Northern Shrikes were recorded within the count circle on the count day of December 29th.  However, Carter recorded two Northern Shrikes within the circle on December 27th, so Northern Shrike got to be included in the totals as a "count week" species.

To sign up as a participant, or find out if you are located within the circle area, please contact Carter at The Kensington Conservancy email carterdorscht.tkc@gmail.com, or call the office at 705-782-2200.
