McDougall Energy Achieves Honours

McDougall Energy Inc., an Esso-branded reseller headquartered out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, recently received the honour of being named a Platinum Club Member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies. This nationally-recognized award distinguishes those businesses who have maintained their Best Managed status for seven years or more.

Media release: The award recognizes the best-in-class of Canadian-owned and managed companies demonstrating strategy, capability, and commitment to achieve sustainable growth. With services across Canada, McDougall Energy has established itself as a premier marketer and distributor of heating oil, propane, gasoline, diesel fuel, commercial lubricants, as well as being a multi branded retailer.

From humble beginnings McDougall Energy has grown into what is now one of Canada’s largest integrated distributors of petroleum products. While being a privately-owned business in its third generation of family ownership McDougall Energy continues to pride itself on providing top quality products and services with a distinct focus on customer experience. McDougall Energy continues to expand its business through acquisitions and organic growth initiatives with strategic partners across Canada.

Now in its 25th year, Canada’s Best Managed Companies is one of the country’s leading business award programs recognizing Canadian-owned and managed companies for innovative, world-class business practices. Every year, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies compete for this designation in a rigorous and independent process that evaluates the caliber of their management ability and practices.

“Companies that earn Platinum Club status, exemplify exceptional vision and leadership and a sustained commitment to growth and innovation,” said Dino Medves, Senior Vice President and Head, CIBC Commercial Banking. “CIBC is proud to recognize these and all of the 2018 Canada’s Best Managed Companies as leaders in their industries.”

Applicants are evaluated by an independent judging panel comprised of representatives from program sponsors in addition to special guest judges. With the criteria being based on much more than just financial performance the 2018 Best Managed companies share commonalities that include a clear strategy of vision, investment in capability and commitment to talent.

“Becoming a Platinum Club member serves as a momentous occasion within our company’s 72 year history. I cannot think of a more deserving accomplishment to share with all those who have made this business what it is today. From those who supported my grandfather [Allan McDougall] when he started in Timmins to the various communities across Canada where we operate today; I truly want to thank everyone who has been a part of the McDougall Energy journey.” says McDougall Energy President, Darren McDougall. “I’d like to also thank Canada’s Best Managed Companies judges, coaches and sponsors for this prestigious award for what is now a remarkable seven years in a row. We are honoured to be a part of such an elite group of Canadian businesses.”

Canada’s Best Managed Companies continues to be the mark of excellence for Canadian-owned and managed companies with revenues over $15 million. Every year since the launch of the program in 1993, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies have competed for this designation in a rigorous and independent process that evaluates their management skills and practices. The awards are granted on four levels:

1) Canada’s Best Managed new winner (one of the new winners selected each year);

2) Requalified member (repeat winners retain the Best Managed designation for two additional years, subject to annual operational and financial review);

3) Gold Standard winner (After three consecutive years of maintaining their Best Managed status, these winners have demonstrated their commitment to the program and successfully retained their award for 4-6 consecutive years)

4) Platinum Club member (winners that maintain Best Managed status for seven years or more).
