Tom Phillips of Bruce Mines was the Grand Prize winner with a monster 1104mm, 19 lb pike he caught at an undisclosed location on Lake Huron, using an unnamed lure. He took home the grand prize of $500 cash, for hauling in the longest fish.

This is the first pike caught during the last 4 years that broke the 1000mm mark. The 2017 winner previously held the record, measuring 972mm.

First runner up was Al Labelle with a 906mm pike.

Second runner up was Caleb McHale with a 818mm pike. Caleb’s cousin was getting married the same day, (both grandchildren to the late Reg McHale who the tournament is named after) so he missed the awards ceremony.

Third runner up was Jason Guay, with a 807mm pike.

The Children’s division also had the biggest winner ever caught by Nick Guay measuring 835mm.

Second runner up was Dana Labelle with a 692mm fish.

Third runner up was Brianna Wakely with a pike 690mm long.

The pike derby is a joint fundraiser for both the Johnson Fire Department and Johnson Recreation Committee. This year 127 people registered to fish with 50 pike being brought in to be measured.

A huge thank you goes out to the Winter family for their efforts to ensure as many fish as possible could be revived and released back into Lake Huron. Every year Teri works on improving the release system, and this year only a few fish were not successfully revived. No fish goes to waste and these were taken by people who wanted to fry them up or smoke them after the derby.

Cori Moore was another volunteer who has worked hard to make the derby a success year after year. Cori collects prizes and sponsor donations for the event. Everyone who registered, left with at least a draw prize on Saturday.
