Local Volunteer Headed to Australia

Pam McCaig has volunteered at several large sporting events over the last two years, including the Pan Am Games, the Para Pan Am Games and the Invictus Games in Toronto last fall. She loved the Invictus Games so much, she decided to apply for 1 of 4 volunteer positions being offered to Canadians at the 2018 Invictus Games in Australia.

During the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, Pam volunteered in the Hospitality Suite at the Air Canada Centre, where she looked after the visiting dignitaries and high profile guests like, Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and Melania Trump during the opening and closing ceremonies.

During the competition, Pam volunteered at Fort York where the archery competition was being held, but also enjoyed watching the sitting volleyball and some tennis events at Ryerson.

Pam recently received some very exciting news. She was 1 of the 4 Canadians selected to lead a team of volunteers at the Invictus Games this October in Australia.

Pam had to write an essay stating why she wanted to be a volunteer at the games, and was interviewed as part of the selection process.

She was the only volunteer of the four chosen, who did not have a military background.

Pam has moved from Bruce Mines to SSM and is currently working at the Sutherland Global Services. She'll take her vacation time to travel to Australia and will incur the cost of air travel, accommodations, and meals away from her venue; estimating the expense to be around $5000.

For Pam, the experience is totally worth the expense.  “It is such a special event and so inspiring to be near the athletes and their families.” They don’t take anything for granted, because they’ve struggled and endured so much.”

Pam can’t even describe what it is like to be a part of the games. To participate means so much to the athletes, and you see and hear stories everyday of how they’ve changed a life. “It just feels good to be a part of something so incredible.”

Pam bought a book about Australia and is learning about the country, climate, and customs so she knows what to expect when she arrives. This is the first time Pam has travelled out of Cana, other than trips to the USA. The games will be held in Sydney Australia from October 20th-27th, 2018.

While at these games, Pam hopes to watch the GT4 supercars, that have been built to accommodate each individual driver’s needs on the race track, and also some of the sailing events.

Pam’s Grandmother is at the Algoma Manor, and as a proud a Grama she's telling everyone about her Grandaughter being selected to go, and she encouraged Pam to tell us her story.
