Rousseau Sisters Race Together

Rousseau Sisters Race Together

On September 12th Thessalon biathlete Shilo Rousseau came back to Ontario from Whistler B.C. to participate at a training camp in Barrie, and then roller ski races in Lake Placid with the Barrie Cross Country ski team. Her younger sister Chandra also joined in on this amazing opportunity.

On Sept 15th and 16th the girls raced together in Lake Placid. The first races were a 3km prologue and a 1.2km sprint race. Both girls had to race in the U20 category. Shilo 18 years old and Chandra 15 years old.

"The down hills were a little scary", said the girls, especially since this was the first time ever racing on this course. You don't want to fall on the pavement because it has no forgiveness, like the snow.  Both girls enjoyed the Saturday races, Shilo taking 2 3rd place finishes.

Then next day was an 8km uphill race on an 8% uphill grade! Chandra said this was her hardest race ever and her legs were burning with pain after 2km into the race. Many athletes dropping out, but both girls pushed through the pain and each had a 2nd place finish in their age category. Shilo in the U20 and Chandra in the U16 category.

After the races they headed back to Barrie with the Barrie Cross Country ski team, where Shilo and Chandra both camped out at Coach Ron's house in the team RV and spend some quality time together for 4 days before the training camp started on Thursday Sept 20th.

This training camp was amazing, and the BXC team had the opportunity to be trained by Ivan Babikov. Ivan Babikov was Team Canada's Head Coach for the cross country ski team at the 2018 winter Olympics in South Korea.

All athletes had time for one on one training and coaching work with Ivan. The girls were amazed that coach Ron was able to get Ivan to come to Barrie and help them with technique work. Both girls said Ivan was an amazing coach, just like Ron, and much fun. They were so grateful to have this opportunity.

Ivan Babikov will be helping Coach Ron again in early November at the Frozen Thunder camp and races, happening in Canmore Alberta.

Both girls returned back to everyday life on Monday Sept 24th, Shilo heading back to Whistle B.C. and Chandra back to Thessalon. The girls are  waiting to see each other again in early November at races in Canmore B.C.

Thanks to Cecilia Rousseau for sending in this update. She also let us know that Shilo is working on completing her Grade 12 online this semester. CASS has asked that she come home and graduate with the Class of 2019, which she plans on doing in June.
