CASS Hockey Splits Weekend Series
The Huskies played a home and home series against the Superior Heights Steelhawks on Friday November 23rd in Thessalon and Sunday November 25th in Sault Ste Marie.

In the first game, in Thessalon, the Steelhawks broke a scoreless tie with 3 minutes left in the first period by scoring 3 goals in a minute span, staking a 3-0 lead.  Not to be outdone, the Huskies found themselves in a 5-on-3 powerplay shortly after and responded with 2 goals in 25 seconds, trimming the Steelhawks lead to 3-2 at the end of the first period.

The rest of the game would go back and forth with each team trading the lead.  The Steelhawks took the lead for good on a powerplay late in the third to go up 6-5, and cemented the win with an empty net goal with 45 seconds left in the game .  Leading the way offensively for the Huskies was Caden King with a goal and 3 assists, Mike Shaw 3 assists, Kayne and Austin Mortimore with a goal and assist each, and Mack Ableson with 2 goals.

On Sunday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens, the Huskies were eager to avenge their loss on Friday night.  After a scoreless first period, the Huskies powerplay got themselves on the board with a goal from Nick Purnis, assisted by Kayne Mortimore at 13:38 of the second period.  The Steelhawks answered with a powerplay goal of their own 8 minutes later to tie things up.  With 30 seconds left in the period, Caden King re-established the Huskies lead by tipping home an Ethan Cooke shot from the blue line, also assisted by Mike Shaw.

The Steelhawks, once again tied up the game with 5 minutes left, forcing overtime.  With Kayne Mortimore, King and Ableson on the ice for an offensive zone draw, they made no mistake as they recovered the puck in the neutral zone and King broke in on the defense, who unfortunately tripped himself up, leaving King to a break away.  King did not waste his chance and buried the puck in the far-side top corner for the win, and weekend series split.

The Huskies are back in action again this weekend in Thessalon with a home game on Friday night at 7:30pm.  The Huskies face the Korah Colts on Friday, and the Saturday game against St. Mary’s has been cancelled.  Admission is $5 for everyone aged 6 and up.  Children 5 and under are free.  The Huskies will be collecting canned food items at the door for local food banks, as food banks need to stock up as we approach the holiday season.  All proceeds from the 50/50 draws will also be matched and donated to the food banks.
