CASS Hockey Final Home Game OT Thriller

CASS Hockey Final Home Game OT Thriller

The CASS Huskies played their final home game of the season against the Korah Colts on Friday February 1st in Thessalon.

With a slow start in the first and a slew of penalties, goaltender Tyler Greco battled hard to keep the Huskies in the game, allowing just one goal, while being outshot 13-3.

The Colts kept up the pressure in the second with 2 more goals, including a powerplay marker late in the period to bring their lead to 3-0 going into the second intermission.  Before the second period came to an end, the Huskies turned on the pressure, resulting in Korah taking two penalties in the last 30 seconds, setting up a 5-on-3 for the Huskies to start the third period.

The Huskies knew it was now or never on the 5-on-3 if they wanted to mount any kind of a comeback in the game.  Just as the first penalty expired, Kayne Mortimore banged in his own rebound to get the Huskies on the board.  The Huskies continued to press all period as they looked to storm back into the game, and the Colts frustrating began to show as they took a rash of penalties in the last 6 minutes of the game, allowing the Huskies to go back to work on the powerplay.

On a 5-on-3 again, K. Mortimore found a wide open Austin Mortimore in the slot and Austin made no mistake, to bring the game to 3-2 with 3:24 left.  With the same powerplay unit still on the ice, the Huskies tied the game up at 3-3 with 2:31 left in the period, on a goal from Michael Shaw, assisted by K. Mortimore and Mack Ableson.

As regulation time expired, the game bound for 3 on 3 overtime, the full Thessalon crowd was amped up and chanting for the Huskies.  In the first shift of the overtime, the Korah Colts controlled the play for most part, creating an exciting chance that Greco shut the door on, leading to the puck turning over to Ableson.  Ableson carried the puck all the way up the far board and into the Colts zone, and fired a shot on net from the face off circle, following his own rebound, he was able to backhand it into the empty net for the victory.  Greco finished with 28 saves in the win.
