Black Bear Café & Eatery Opening Soon

Mary Lou, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, and her husband Roy recently retired and moved to the Island from Cochrane, Alberta.

The dream was to retire on the water, but it was too pricey out west. They looked at the east coast, but it was really only a 6 month community and they would have to spend winters elsewhere.

On a whim, they decided to come to St. Joseph Island and were pleasantly surprised with the waterfront prices and opportunities for opening a business. The couple soon purchased what was formerly the Island Bakery, and then a home on the water.

Since then, they’ve been working hard at renovating and upgrading the building and property located near Kent's Corner with the help of some good friends, neighbours, and local contractors.

The café has hired about 8 new employees, a mix of summer students and adult staff to bake and serve.

Mary Lou and Roy will be open for business, with a limited menu on Friday May 17th, offering pizza, ice cream, soup and sandwich and daily specials along with some amazing baked goods. The cafe will be serving a full menu selection by their Grand Opening on June 1st.

Coffee lovers will want to try the Black Bear's own blend called Early Riser, hand roasted by the St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters.

A gift shop and consignment area featuring local syrup from Mountain Maple Products, puddingstone creations from Anipich Rocks studio, and Bob's Chainsaw Carving will give customers another reason to stop by the Black Bear Café.

Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 6am-8pm and Sundays 8am-6pm. Call 705-246-7820 for take-out orders.
