A new 9 hole disc golf course was officially opened to the public on St. Joseph Island Saturday June 29th.

The beautiful course is laid out through an existing trail system in Jocelyn Township at the Mountainview Centennial Grounds.

Volunteers, Mike Bohms, Cori and Ian Murdock and others worked with Jocelyn Recreation to turn an idea into a course that anyone can use free of charge. They did an amazing job preparing the site and setting up the first 9 holes. It is very well signed and user friendly, although getting the disc in the basket is not that easy. The rules are very similar to golf and all 9 holes are Par 3, but it took many more turns than that for this newbie to get it done.

There is a practice area in the open field, so you can warm up before you hit the course, practice your long shots, and easily retrieve any stray discs.

Maps with score cards are available on site, as well as a selection of beginner discs so you can try out the course, if you don't have a set of your own. There is also a disc return slot in the box, so if you find any on the course, they will be returned to their owner. A set of discs can also be signed out from the Jocelyn Township office during regular business hours, call 705-246-2025.

Toonie Tuesday Doubles started July 2nd and each week at 6pm people are invited to come out and play a round for prizes. Partners are randomly selected and change each week, so no need to bring a partner to play. Beginners are welcome and discs will be available to borrow.

If all goes as planned, the organizers hope to add an additional 9 holes in September. This would open up the opportunity to host disc golf tournaments in the future.

About 30 people attended to Official Opening on Saturday and tried a round of disc golf for the first time. Derek Bookman was the winner of a draw for a golf disc.

These girls knew what to wear! You'll be in the bush and off the trail looking for stray discs so long pants, bug dope, and good shoes are highly recommended.
