CASS Hockey Enjoys Successful 3 Game Homestand

The CASS Hockey team played host for 3 consecutive high school league games over a 3 week period in Thessalon against the Korah Colts and St. Mary's Knights.

First, on Saturday January 11th, the Huskies faced off against the second place Colts.  In a hard, fast and exciting affair, the highly motivated Huskies rebounded from a slow first period and took control in the second and third periods.  Korah got on the board first, but took a penalty after the goal and Mason Mortimore responded 10 seconds later on the powerplay to tie it up.    At the end of the first, Korah scored again to take a 1 goal lead into the intermission.  In the beginning of second period, with Trent Smith in the penalty box, the Huskies scored 2 quick short handed goals from Mack Ableson and Chase MacIntyre, 17 seconds apart  to take the lead for good.  In the third period Ableson added another goal, along with Smith and Shaymus Gregory to hold on for a 6-3 final win over the Colts.  Austin Mortimore had 2 assists, with other assists credited to Ableson, MacIntyre, Zach Mercer, and Spencer Osborne.  Goaltender Tyler Greco made 27 saves in the win.

Next up was the first place St. Mary's Knights on Friday January 17th.  With a slew of penalties handed out to both teams throughout the game, special teams played a large factor in this game.  The Huskies opened the scoring on the penalty kill when Mason Mortimore banked the puck off the goaltender's skate from behind the net, assisted by Joel Lamoureux.  Two minutes later, on a 2 on 1 rush Michael Shaw made a beautiful feed to Osborne who made no mistake burying the puck to take a 2-0 lead.  In the second period, the Knights began to close the gap just 2 minutes into the period, but the Huskies quickly responded 3 minutes later on the powerplay with another nice feed from Shaw to Shaymus Gregory.  The Knights would reduce the lead to one goal again with a goal with 6 minutes left in the second.  The score would remain 3-2 until 5 minutes left in the third when Austin Mortimore took advantage on a good bounce off the boards on the penalty kill to score unassisted over the Knight's goaltenders far shoulder.  The Huskies 4-2 victory would be there first win over perennial powerhouse St. Mary's since a 5-4 win in November of 2014.  Tyler Greco stood tall in net, making 31 saves.

On Saturday February 1st, the Huskies hosted the Korah Colts again, and in what seemed to be a common theme, special teams once again played a huge role.  The game was scoreless 4 minutes left in the first period, when Shaymus Gregory scored his first of two back to back shorthanded goals, on the same penalty kill!  Gregory's goals were 1:15 apart, with the first one on a 2 on 1 and a great feed from Lamoureux.  On his second short handed goal, at the end of a long shift Ableson made a nice heads-up play to find Gregory streaking up ice for a break away pass.  This would be the Huskies' sixth shorthanded goal in their last 3 games.  Ableson rounded out the scoring on the powerplay in the third period, unassisted.  Tyler Greco made 37 saves for his first league shut out in two seasons.

The CASS Hockey team would like to thank their fans for their incredible support over the four games that were played in Thessalon this season.  The stands were full and loud for all 4 games, which saw the Huskies go undefeated in Thessalon.  The team will be hosting the 5th Annual NSSSA Invitational Hockey Tournament on March 28th and 29th in Thessalon.  Stay tuned for more details to come.
