New Business Opening Soon
A new business opening in the Desbarats area is the only one of its kind in Northern Ontario.
Upland game preserve owner, Mike May, hopes to have his operation on Puddingstone Road up and running this fall. His family’s 267 acre property in Johnson Township, consists of farm fields surrounded by mixed bush, which is perfect terrain for hunting ring necked pheasants.

The game preserve is a dream and early retirement plan for Mike, who wants to wrap up his full time employment in Sault Ste. Marie over the next couple of years and be done with commuting for good. He is an avid outdoorsman with years of hunting experience, however raising birds has proved to be a real learning experience for him.

He started with 100 day old chicks, which arrived from the hatchery in late June. Since then he’s learned what to do and what not to do with pheasants. Mike says,” they are not chickens, and whatever you know about chickens does not apply to these birds”. He has built a three stage pen system for raising his birds, with aviary netting to keep them in and birds of prey out.  He’s witnessed coyotes sitting in the field and watch his flock, so an electric fence has been installed as well.

Mike hopes to open the preserve to hunters in mid- October, sometime after our Thanksgiving weekend. He will offer a discounted hunt for the first season, as a trial run to get a feel for how things will go and work on his set up. Groups of hunters, a minimum of two per hunt, will have to pre-book and purchase a minimum of three birds each. All resident hunters must possess, and show proof of, a valid small game licence.

Hunters can bring their own bird dog or use Mike’s Labrador retriever, for a small fee. Eventually the preserve will have an official name and online presence with either a website or facebook page, but for now anyone interested in trying a hunt can call Mike at 705-782-6561 or 705-941-5833 to reserve a date.
